If Destroyed Still True (2025) is a short story published in Canal Magazine #4: Dark Rooms, in both English and Spanish. A shop girl witnesses a council block explode, and puts rumour to the test as a political tool.
"I wondered if I would do it too. I waited to feel myself tick. I waited for the inevitable feeling, the one that comes when you open the door to death and suddenly it takes your hand, and then you’re walking towards the ring road like its the most obvious choice in the world. It doesn’t come, so instead I sit in my swivel chair and imagine Helen’s last moments, her dire circumstance, when she realised that only actions count in this world. Her penance didn’t matter, nor did the words littering the world stage, parcels of fritter and lie. She’d been seated in the waiting room on the other side of the filibuster, she’d been a good girl waiting for good to crown. She counted down the deadlines the regime had been given. Why does the burden of proof lie on the victim? Here is the proof, she said, I have felt it even from afar, across the distances of culture language religion border. The fuse of it has reached my body."
